Amazing Street Photos

Posted by Ari on Sep 2

One of my favorite blogs, Transfer links out to this great set of street photos of New York.

House Math

Posted by Ari on Jul 9

For those of you considering real estate in the city (and who isn't), check out House Math, a calculator which compares your investment in a NY apartment with the equivalent rent expense should you use your money in a more productive manner. Cool stuff.

The Story of Florent

Posted by Ari on Oct 23

A comprehensive history of Florent, the eccentric diner in the Meatpacking District. Never been there personally, but a long-time waitress is a neighbor. Via Kottke

NYWiki in Newsday

Posted by Ari on Aug 10 | Comments (0)

NYWiki was featured yesterday in NY Newsday. Fairly negative article, of course, since Wikis can be hard to understand. All press is good press. Does anyone have a hard copy, my Mom wants one!

Starbucks on Delancey Street

Posted by Ari on Aug 6

I often boasted that I lived a mile from the nearest Starbucks. No more! A sign of civilization has arrived on the LES.

WeFixNYC

Posted by Ari on Jul 27

Andrew Rasiej, candidate for public advocate, has whipped up a Flikr/Google Maps hybrid which allows you to report potholes. WeFixNYC.com - pretty cool stuff. and I thought public advocate was a stupid position!

No Menus (From This Century)!

Posted by Ari on Mar 21

You know that big pile of takeout menus you've got in your kitchen drawer? Well, the NY Public Library has been keeping a stack since 1851. (via kottke)

New York that Might Have Been

The New York that might have been on Gridskipper*.

Weird Orange Things in Central Park

Posted by Ari on Feb 20 | Comments (0)

Does anyone know what all those weird orange things are in central park? I haven't seen any photos of them anywhere else or heard anything in the media. Could I be the only person who noticed them? Central Park was totally empty today, no tourists, no baby strollers clogging the paths, no one taking pictures, just these gate-like things.

A List of All the Starbucks in NYC

Buzzz. Check out the Starbucks in New York City page (includes photos). Part of the StarbucksEveryWhere.net website.

NYC Trivia Game

Posted by Ari on Jan 2 | Comments (0)

who_logo.gifFor my birthday the wife bought me the New York City Trivia Game. Be warned -- it's probably not be a good idea to come over our house for a dinner party anytime soon.

New York Changing

Posted by Ari on Dec 2 | Comments (2)

nychanging.jpg
New York Changing just absorbed a half hour of my life. "Walk" down the streets of Manhattan and compare side-by-side photos of the current city against photos from the early 20th century. Link from Dashes.

Born in the USM

Posted by Ari on Oct 16 | Comments (0)

The wife and I got turkey sandwiches at the local bodega last night. Hers with American cheese and sick amounts of extra mayo, mine with munster and a demure helping of mustard. On check out, we notice that one of the sandwiches is marked "M". The counterperson helpfully points out that the M is for "Merican" cheese.

What I'm Doing Today

Posted by Ari on Oct 9 | Comments (0)

October 9th and 10th is the second annual openhousenewyork. Many of New York's most architecturally interesting buildings are open to the public for tours. Last year, the wife and I visited City Hall and the Tweed Courthouse. This year we'll be stopping by the Eldridge Street Synagogue and maybe The High Line, if only to fantasize about how nice the West side would look if they tore down that rusty old piece of crap. Whoops, did I say that?

Green Buildings Open House 2004

Posted by Ari on Sep 25 | Comments (0)

green_home.jpgHard to believe it's been a year already. October 2nd is time for the second annual Green Buildings Open House put on by Green Home NYC. This was a great event last year, with almost all the tours at capacity. It was really fascinating and inspiring to find out about all the environmentally-conscious construction projects in my neighborhood. Definitely worth checking out.

Christians Against Love

Posted by Ari on Jul 25 | Comments (3)

antimarriage.jpgYou never know what you're going to walk into when you leave your apartment. Like today, the wife and I decided to go downtown to do a little discount shopping at Century 21 and J&R. Little did we know that a coalition of what appeared to be mostly Chinese and Hispanic church groups would be rallying against gay marriage.

I keep trying to remind myself that I'm the one out of the mainstream in the whole gay marriage debate. That contrary to all logic and compassion, most Americans think it should be banned. But it's awfully weird and disconcerting to see citizens of the most cosmopolitan and diverse city in the whole world with their heads shoved that far up their own asses.

NYWiki Launches

nywiki_logo.gifNYWiki.com has launched. NYWiki is a collaborative encyclopedia of New York City written by ordinary New Yorkers. Whether you're an expert in a particular topic or just an obsessive, you can help build the site by documenting whatever you wish about the city. You can even list your home, building, or business on a map of Manhattan.
