About Everything New York

Everything New York started out as a big idea.

There have been several projects in the open-source movement to develop "open" encyclopedias, where literally all human knowledge would be described, commented upon, and edited by a community of dedicated vounteers. Everything2 is one such effort; the WikiPedia is another.

These projects are vast and impressive, but I couldn't help but think that their ambitions outstripped their capabilities. After all, "Everything" is a lot of stuff. And who is to say what level of granularity Everything is to include? A perfect map of the world is useless because it is the exact same size as the world itself.

So I thought to myself, wouldn't the same philosophy work much better on a more tightly defined subject with more motivated editors? And weren't New York-related books, documentaries, movies being popped-out like Eggo waffles? Thus, the idea of Everything New York was born.

Then reality hit. Everything New York is still a lot of stuff. And, of course, the URL wasn't EverythingNYC.com so people would expect me to cover upstate. Egad! I don't even know how to spell Schenectady (I just looked it up). Besides, reference is boring. Opinion is where it's at.

So Everything New York doesn't plan on covering everything, or even most things. I will try to cover some interesting stuff generally related to the city, its inhabitants, some tall buildings, and other items which cross my path. I hope I didn't get your hopes up.

If you'd like to contribute email me at aripaparo at yahoo dot com. I don't imagine I'll be able to cover "Everything" on my own.

Ari-

How can you have a everythingny site and not include UrbanBaby.com? Maybe you don't have kids? Regardless, young lad, you gotta add it asap.

Thanks
Maria
