Notes from the editors panel at the NYBloggers event run by Gothamist.
Panelists: Jen Chung, Lockhart Steele, Choire Sicha and moderator Felix Salmon.
Legs cramping, not sure sitting on floor was the best idea.
Felix: "Choire is the big queeny sterotype of the blogosphere", "Lock is even more of a stereotype", "Jen is the person who takes the boring bits of the NY daily news and puts them in one place." So, why are you doing this and why should we care?
Jen: Jake told me to.
Choire: Jen is a machine. Don't you have a full time job?
Jen: I don't go to the gym anymore. I would be seeing more movies.
Lock: Do you cheat?
Jen: Yes. I'll post on business trips then ask Jake to post them later. I'll post before going to bed. (ed. she's obsessed!)
Lock talks about how people don't know people have websites. Jen talks about how people at work don't know about it.
Felix: If blogs don't have influence, why write one?
Lock: I like to write.
Choire: Shouldn't you disclose that you own half of Clinton street?
Choire continues saying that he just does stuff.
Felix: Are you Nick Denton's bitch? (paraphrased)
Choire: Well, I have an intern. [Introduces "Henry"]. I get to write things on the Internet that no one else gets to say and I get paid for it.
Felix: Are there upsides to being a celebrity blogger?
Choire: The website's never gotten me laid. I reject the grounds of the question.
Jen denies getting laid because of Gothamist.
Lock: A waspy guy blogging about the Red Sox doesn't attract women.
Felix: [Reading a question from a known editor (DeMenco(?)) provided by Jen] why are bloggers upset when people say that most bloggers are medicore?
Jen: Everyone's read a blog or email saying "What the fuck are you writing about?" because everyone wants to be heard. She asks why they don't star their own website.
Lock: I press the delete button.
Jen: It's a community and people want to be supported. People want to express their opinions.
Felix: DeMenco is a hack.
Choire: The Internet is filled with crap and I've blogged crap. Weblogs can hit a wall, where you either quit or break through. People are learning how to write on the Internet.
Felix: Is there a benefit of editing?
Jen: It would be great if people checked my typos. People like seeing me post, and there are so many hours in a day.
Choire: I don't think bloggers work well in isolation. We're launching a new site tomorrow (!) for Gawker and I'm working with the editor there. It's more experiential rather than hierarchical.
Lock: The feedback loop from readers is amazing. Your readers email you with news you're actually interested in.
Jen: Gothamist has comments, unlike Gawker. We have problems in certain areas, like race, etc. For every 1 bad commenter there's 20 good ones.
Felix: You're building brands here. Are you posting things because that's what the site requires?
Jen: Yeah, god. "Practice makes better." It's hard.
Choire: Yeah, exactly.
Felix: Are you moving up the Gawker corporate ladder?
Choire: I write all day. I was doing Gawker in the morning while working in Miami Beach.
Jen: I couldn't keep up a personal site at this level, but this is what I've gotten used to. My mom reads it to know that I'm alive.
Audience: Is there a tradeoff to publishing on your own vs. in a group?
Felix: I do long-form blogging on my own blog (felixm.com ?), shorter on memefirst. Blogging allows you to tailor your writing to different audiences.
Discussion of crazy length of Felix's blog postings...
Felix: I have the suspicion we're all writing for a tiny group of media professionals in NY. Aren't we totally irrelevant?
Jen: I'm the kind of person who tries to remember everything. I post things which are interesting to us.
Choire: We're all involved in niche publishing so we have a limited scope.
Felix: Matthew Rose is a retired blogger who also writes for the WSJ. He claims to have more pleasure from blogging.
Jen: It's more immediate, its the piece you had in mind.
Lock: It's also fame. Publicists are discovering weblogs. A woman I've never met came over and introduced herself to me then brought over Choire to introduce him. We can traffic in that kind of fame (ed. this was funnier when Lock told it).
More skullfucking discussion, nothing resolved...
Choire: I really worry about PR agents. People have offered me free trips to the Rockies.
Felix: Do you have an ethical duty to turn down a free trip to the Rockies?
Choire: I don't ski. Maybe wine country. Seriously I worry about undisclosed articles appearing which are unattributed.
Audience: Why are you so popular?
Lock: There's a natural fascination with the Lower East Side. People love focused media. You can see one or two interests if you read enough.
Discussion of pandas...
Felix: Do you have an idea who your audience is?
Jen: Like who are friends are.
Choire: If you find an area you love, you'll write about it every day. Consumers are really fickle so if you don't write every day they'll be gone.
Breaking news: Choire is giving a sneak preview of his site launching tomorrow. www.defamer.com, login defamer, password: ??. Ooh, looks nice. Hollywood reporter meets Gawker.
